Dog Breeders & Sellers Law
About
Wisconsin's law regulating dog breeding, sales, and adoption-for-fee requires inspection and licensing of many dog breeders, dealers, and sellers, as well as shelters and rescues that foster and adopt out dogs. The law also prohibits selling puppies less than 7 weeks old unless they go with their mothers, and requires that certificates of veterinary inspection – health certificates – accompany dogs that are sold or adopted for a fee.
Complaints
When shelters receive complaints regarding facilities licensed under the Dog Seller Program, the caller should be advised to file a complaint through the on-line complaint system found on the DATCP Dog Seller Program site. The inspector responsible for the county involved will be assigned to follow-up on the complaint. DATCP only has authority to pursue complaints made regarding licensed facilities or those who should be licensed under the law. A list of currently licensed facilities and a considerable amount of information about the program and requirements is also available on the program site which is provided below.
