DAY 2: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
8:00 AM - Registration & Breakfast
9:00 - 10:00 AM - Build UP & Fix UP: Shelter Builds & Renovations: If you Build It, they will come, Part 1
Building a new shelter or renovating an existing shelter is an exciting prospect. We often assume these projects will support improved care and life-saving of the pets we care for in our shelter. But without efficient and intentional operational practices grounded in an awareness of Capacity for Care, facility investments alone rarely bring the desired improvements and at times make the challenges worse!
By: Becky Stuntebeck DVM, DABVP, UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
10:00 - 10:15 AM - Break & Vendor Hall
10:15 - 11:15 AM - Build UP & Fix UP: Shelter Builds & Renovations, Part 2
In this hour we’ll discuss the practical considerations for embarking on a new shelter build or renovation project that will help to optimize animal care and life-saving. How many kennels do we really need? Which ones should we buy? What spaces do we need? We’ll explore these and other topics through a lens of the most common regrets and mistakes made in shelter construction projects.
By: Becky Stuntebeck DVM, DABVP, UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program
11:15 - 11:30 AM - Break & Vendor Hall
11:30 - 12:30 PM - Don’t Give UP: Return to Home Solutions
Reuniting animals with their people and community is a crucial component of the work we do, but there is tremendous room for improvement with national return rates for dogs generally below 30% and cats under 5%. In this session we’ll share a wide range of practical solutions that technology and human support can offer to help get animals back home.
By: Renee Wolfgramm, Client Services Director, Pethealth Inc. and Laurie Rindquist, Director of Customer Service, Dane County Humane Society
12:30 -1:30 PM - LUNCH
1:30 - 2:45 PM - Move them UP! How Pathway Planning Saves Lives!
One of the most critical, yet often overlooked, steps in the shelter intake process is pathway planning. We will discuss how pathway planning from day 1 (or before!) can help ensure that animals in your care have a humane, enriched, and efficient stay in the shelter. We'll share tips for use throughout the animals' stay to keep them cruising along their path (or help them take an appropriate detour) with population rounds, preselection, foster-to-adopt, and other programs.
By: Erica Schumacher, DVM, UW Shelter Medicine Program
2:45 - 3:00 PM - Break & Sweet Treats in Vendor Hall
3:00 - 4:30 - Chin UP! Carry On Surviving!
It’s time to keep your head up and your stress down. Learn about the power of laughter and how to channel your inner excitement to help mitigate stress in the world of animal welfare.
